The gauntlet of opinions

If you have ever been involved with a Network Marketing or MLM business, you will have no doubt run the gauntlet of other peoples opinions. They’re free and pretty much everyone has a few to spare, but how often does such opinion wrongly misrepresent the true potential of a network marketing venture? Having been involved with network marketing for around 20 years, my experience bears this out, in that everyone does have an opinion. Well meaning parents concerned for my career prospects, unsupportive friends and family, quick to point out that I was brain washed and embarking on a pyramid selling scam, an overbearing boss who threatened to sack me should I get involved, a close family friend who apparently lost everything to a similar venture years ago. With the benefit of hindsight I would say that a person must draw their own conclusion, that 99% of such casual opinion is worthless and seldom the grounds for starting a business.

In 1946, Darryl Zanuck, a movie producer with 20th Century Fox said: “Television won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.” In 1878, a memo at Western Union said: “This ‘telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us.” In 1977, Ken Olson who at the time was President of Digital Corporation said: “There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home.” And as I sit here with a TV to my left, three PC screens to my front and four phone lines to my right, I wonder what happened to all those well meaning souls who over the years have ‘presented’ their well meaning opinions on network marketing and of all the reasons why I would fail. As with Darryl Zanuck, Western Union and Ken Olson, history has proved my critics wrong!

And if you too are running the gauntlet of other peoples opinions, measure the qualification of such views and instead look to the following words of wisdom…

Network marketing – opinions (& quotes) that count!

Bill Clinton, Former US President said: “You strengthen our country and our economy not just by striving for your own success but by offering the opportunity to others.” Robert T. Kiyosaki, Investor, Entrepreneur and best selling Author offered: “Network Marketing gives people the opportunity with very low risk and very low financial commitment to build their own income generating asset and acquire great wealth.” Also that: “If you are a person with big dreams and would love to support others in achieving their big dreams, then the network marketing business is definitely a business for you. You can start your business part-time at first and then as your business grows, you can help other people start their part-time business. This is a value worth having – a business and people who help others make their dreams come true.” Robert also said: “For people choosing to use a network marketing system to build a business in the B quadrant, the price of entry is a lot lower, the risks are lower, and the education and support are there to guide you through this personal development process.” And, “If I had to do it all over again, rather than build an old style type of business, I would have started building a network marketing business.”

Internationally acclaimed business people agree that Network Marketing represents one of the greatest opportunities in the world today. During a television interview, billionaire and property tycoon, Donald Trump was asked what he would do if he lost everything including his business empire. “I would do Network Marketing” Someone in the audience sniggered and laughed, Donald turned around to them and said “That’s why I’m sitting up here and you’re down in the audience” Billionaire American Entrepreneur and Author, Donald Trump also said: “I am often asked if Network Marketing is a Pyramid Scheme. My reply is that corporations really are pyramid schemes. A corporation has only one person at the top, generally the CEO, and everyone else below.” He added, “Network Marketing has proven itself to be a viable and rewarding source of income. There have been some remarkable examples of success.”

And what about Paul Zane Pilzer, Nobel Prize Winning Economist and Author, who offered the following very well qualified opinion: “In todays world, working for yourself is actually the safer route, and working for a corporation has become the riskier proposition.” Further to this, he said “We’re in the midst of a boom in home-based businesses, and it shows no sign of slowing.” And that, “Home-based businesses are one of the fastest-growing segments in our economy, and that trend will only continue, as the age of the corporation, which began barely a century ago, now gives way to the age of the entrepreneur.”

Internationally respected entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker, Jim Rohn said: “Network Marketing is really the greatest source of grass root capitalism, because it teaches people how to take a small bit of capital, that is your time and build the ‘American’ dream.” He added, “Network marketing is the big wave of the future. It’s taking the place of franchising, which now requires too much capital for the average person.” Similarly, international renowned motivational speaker and best selling author, Brian Tracy said: “The future of Network Marketing is unlimited. There’s no end in sight. It will continue to grow, because better people are getting in to it. It will be one of the respected business methods in the world.” He also said, “People don’t trust conglomerates; they trust individuals. Network marketing brings trust and the quality of the relationship to the center of the business. And it enables you to expand indefinitely, simply by expanding the number of relationships.” Brian Tracy also offered: “Network marketing is based purely on relationship selling, which is the state of the art in selling today. Small and large companies throughout the country and the world are realizing that individuals selling to their friends and associates is the future of sales, because the critical element in buying is trust.”

“Network Marketing has produced more millionaires than any other industry in the history of the world.” Les Brown, motivational speaker

You will meet people who believe all network marketing opportunities are pyramid schemes. Why spend all your time trying to convince them otherwise when there are legions of people who are open to what you have?” Randy Gage, Network Marketer, Trainer and Author

“A generation ago most people settled down into a career which was thought would last them for life and some people worked their whole life for the same employer. That type of security no longer exists. People have to find their own way through the competitive world of employment and self-employment. Network Marketing has become an extremely important way of giving people independence and independence can give people security.” Lord Rees Mogg (former Financial Editor-in-Chief of The Times)

“Today franchises make up a major part of the western world’s gross national product (e.g. McDonalds, Kall Kwik). It is predicted that Network Marketing as a means of distribution will have an even greater impact on global market places. Network Marketing attracts all types of people from all walks of life. Once the domain of housewives and blue-collar workers, Network Marketing today attracts corporate management, stockbrokers and accountants.” Success Magazine

A message from the former Prime Minister, Tony Blair MP to the Direct Selling Association at the DSA’s Annual Conference. “I’m delighted to offer my support to the Direct Selling Association and point out to you how big a part direct selling is of our domestic market in the sale of goods and services. We’ve got something like 13% of the entire home shopping market done by direct selling, almost half a million people are involved in direct selling and 40,000 of those are doing it full time…It also shows how, in a changing economy and changing labour market, there are great new opportunities out there. I want to say to you that this is a good thing to be involved in and that we, as a Government recognise the tremendous contribution that people who are taking up direct selling opportunities can make to the overall prosperity of the economy. So it is well worth doing, well worth being involved in and I wish those of you who are engaged in it, the very best for the future.” Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Tony Blair MP
